Interview
Trinidad And Tobago
Just Kidz Emergency is the Caribbean’s first dedicated pediatric urgent care facility, providing specialized child centered emergency care, follow up clinics, observation services, and outreach support through a holistic healthcare approach.
1 Please provide us a brief bio of yourself and your health industry background.
Just Kidz Emergency (JKE) is the first dedicated pediatric urgent care facility in the Caribbean. It offers an all in one healthcare solution built upon four pillars: pediatric follow up clinics, observation pods, urgent care, and outreach services. Our pediatric emergency service provides dedicated urgent care seven days a week by pediatric emergency physicians. We are conveniently located next to radiology services, with CT, MRI, and specialized laboratory services all available within a short distance. Just Kidz Emergency also offers pediatric medical and surgical clinics focused on follow up and holistic care. In addition, our observation pods allow children to be monitored alongside their parents for short term periods before discharge or further disposition, providing time for safe recovery, resolution, and parental reassurance. The final pillar of care focuses on parent training and educational courses designed to further empower families to continue expert care for their children at home.
2 What motivated you to pursue this particular health initiative, and what impact has it had on individuals or communities?
Just Kidz Emergency Medical was established to fill a critical gap in Caribbean healthcare: the lack of dedicated private pediatric urgent care. Founded by a team of pediatricians with more than 50 years of collective experience, the facility was created to combine public sector expertise with the service standards and accessibility of private healthcare. Since opening on October 31, 2023, we have seen a steady increase in the number of patients visiting our facility. We welcomed 2,177 patients in 2024 and 2,370 patients in 2025, reflecting an 8.8% year over year increase.
3 Tell us more about your business/company, your job profile, and the specific responsibilities you undertake.
Since opening in 2023, Just Kidz has revolutionized pediatric care accessibility in Trinidad and the wider Caribbean. Key milestones include: - Operational Excellence: Maintaining a “no wait time” policy where patients are assessed and treated immediately upon arrival. - Medical Innovation: Implementing advanced diagnostic technology that requires less than 1 mL of blood for full panels including CBC, renal, and liver testing, delivering results in just 10 minutes rather than hours. - Service Expansion: Introducing specialized “SOS Problem Feeders” workshops and “Safe Baby Weaning” sessions to support holistic child development. - Community Education: Establishing a weekly safety segment on the “Now Morning Show,” reaching thousands with life saving pediatric tips while conducting live BLS demonstrations at schools and local malls. - Strategic Growth: Successfully scaling a child friendly healthcare experience at accessible costs while becoming a trusted pillar within the community.
4 Can you share a specific story or testimonial that exemplifies the positive impact your project has had on an individual or community?
“Just Kidz Emergency offers extremely professional services and investigations to treat urgent cases, provide emergency care, and facilitate observation, potentially avoiding hospital admissions. I appreciate that the pediatricians have extensive emergency department experience and are able to triage which patients require hospital care and which can be safely managed at home, especially after hours and on weekends.” (NR, Oct. 2025). This testimonial is one of many that reflects the positive impact Just Kidz Emergency continues to have on children, parents, and the wider community through accessible and trusted pediatric care.
5 What inspired you to create this health-related creative project, and what message or impact were you aiming to convey?
Just Kidz Emergency Medical was established to fill a critical gap in Caribbean healthcare: the lack of dedicated private pediatric urgent care. The facility was inspired by the requests of many parents and designed to meet the growing need for healthcare that combines public sector expertise with the service standards and accessibility of private care. As the first facility of its kind in the region, it provides ready access to specialized pediatric emergency physicians through an all in one healthcare solution that includes urgent care, specialist consultations, and observation services under one roof.
6 What unique artistic or creative elements did you utilize to communicate the health message or story?
Our company maintains active and highly rated profiles on Facebook, with a 100% recommendation rate from reviews, as well as Instagram. Our content is educational and community focused, featuring pediatric health videos, safety segments, and workshops such as “Safe Baby Weaning.”
7 How does your creative project contribute to raising awareness, promoting behaviour change, or improving health outcomes?
Just Kidz Emergency Medical raises awareness through expert digital content focused on child health, including seizure first aid, viral illness management, and sports safety. The organization also promotes positive behavioral change through parent training initiatives, educational safety segments on the “Now Morning Show,” and specialized pediatric care designed to improve health outcomes while reducing medical anxiety for both children and parents.
8 What unique and compelling elements did you incorporate into your advertising materials to capture attention and deliver the health message effectively?
Just Kidz Emergency Medical utilizes highly visual, bite sized social media content and “Myth vs. Fact” messaging to address parental anxiety, while featuring Bob the therapy dog to help reduce fear. Our approach also includes highly relevant seasonal health tips and team spotlights to build trust and educate families.
9 Congratulations! As a winner of the TITAN Health Awards, what does it mean to you, your company or team to receive this award distinction?
Thanks so much! This award means so much to our team. As a small Caribbean based startup, we are incredibly grateful and humbled to have our team’s work recognized on the world stage. Of course, we could not have achieved this without the support of the amazing young people and families we serve, and we are truly honored to have earned their trust.
10 Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the TITAN Health Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
Just Kidz is unique not only for its status as a “first,” but also for its human centered approach to emergency medicine. While traditional emergency rooms can often feel traumatic for children, Just Kidz utilizes techniques such as conscious sedation, a controlled method that allows children to remain responsive yet relaxed during painful procedures like suturing, significantly reducing childhood medical anxiety. Our “Solution Shop” model integrates multidisciplinary teams including pediatricians, allied therapists, and specialists to treat the whole child rather than just the acute symptom. By eliminating common barriers such as long wait times and fragmented care, our team has created a benchmark for pediatric excellence that we are truly grateful to see recognized internationally.
11 What was the biggest challenge with this project?
One of the biggest challenges of this project was summarizing all of our passionate ideas and initiatives into short, succinct statements that accurately reflected our company’s vision and who we are as a team.
12 How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?
This recognition has undoubtedly strengthened our team’s self belief and further ignited our drive to continue striving for excellence.
13 What are your top three (3) things you think is unique about the health industry?
These are three aspects of the healthcare industry that we find especially unique and meaningful: - The pediatric healthcare model is uniquely focused on prevention rather than maintenance, making information sharing and advocacy especially important. - The importance of creating welcoming, inclusive, and child friendly spaces for children and families. The need for genuine partnership with parents and families in order to work together as a team to improve child health outcomes.
14 What makes your country unique in the health industry?
Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) holds a distinctive position within the healthcare industry due to its robust public funding model and its role as a regional hub for specialized care. T&T offers free universal healthcare at the point of delivery for all citizens. Some key aspects include: - The “Parallel” Health System: One of T&T’s defining structural features is its dual healthcare framework, where public healthcare exists alongside private healthcare providers. - T&T’s emerging role as a center for specialized medical services within the Caribbean region.
15 Where do you see the evolution of the health industry going over the next 5-10 years?
The potential integration of artificial intelligence in ethical ways to improve healthcare is something that truly excites and interests us.
16 What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the health industry?
We would recommend the following resources for those looking to further improve their knowledge and skills within the healthcare industry: - Digital Health & AI: Coursera and FutureLearn provide specialized courses in AI in Healthcare, Health Informatics, and Telemedicine. - Explore “7 Ways to Enhance Your Healthcare Skills” from USF Blogs for a broader career development roadmap.
17 Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Our families supported us every step of the way throughout this journey. In particular, the families and children we work with continue to inspire us every day and remain the reason we do what we do.
18 What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Have a strong “why” — a compelling vision and purpose that motivates you to get out of bed each morning and continue striving toward your goals, even on the days when things feel difficult.
19 Which THREE (3) friends/peers would you nominate to participate in the next TITAN Health Awards?
- FMH Emergency Medical Clinic, Barbados - Sandy Crest Medical Centre, Barbados - Psychologists for the Growing Mind, Trinidad
20 Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?
